How we research

The source list is built before a word of script is written. Every date, number and name in an episode traces back to something in it — a primary record, a peer-reviewed paper, an institutional archive, or a published book. If a claim cannot be traced, it does not go in.

There is no invented dialogue and no reconstructed inner life. Quotation marks are used only for words someone actually wrote or that a witness recorded. Where the evidence is contested, the episode says so rather than picking the tidier version.

Indigenous oral testimony is treated as evidence, not colour. In Episode 1 the Inuit accounts were right and the written authorities were wrong, and both wrecks were eventually found where that testimony said they would be.
