Terms of use

1. Using this site
Read it, link to it, quote it with attribution. Do not republish whole pages as your own, and do not scrape the site to rebuild it elsewhere.
2. Your ebook licence
Buying a companion book gives you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to read it on any device you own and to keep it permanently. The files carry no DRM, because DRM annoys honest readers and stops nobody.
You may:
- — read it on as many of your own devices as you like
- — keep your own backups
- — quote short passages with attribution
You may not:
- — redistribute, resell, share or upload the files
- — republish the text in whole or in substantial part
- — use the contents to train a machine learning model
Copyright in the text and the illustrations remains with the author.
3. Refunds
If a book is not what you expected, reply to your receipt within 30 days of purchase and you will be refunded in full. No explanation is required and you may keep the files. Refunds are processed by Payhip and normally reach you within five working days.
Consumers in the UK and EU: by starting the download you agree that delivery of the digital content begins immediately, which would ordinarily end the statutory 14-day withdrawal right. The 30-day policy above is offered regardless and is more generous.
4. Updates to a book
If a book is revised — a correction, or new evidence — the new version is delivered to everyone who already bought it, free, through Payhip.
5. Accuracy
Every date, number, name and quotation is checked against the sources published with it, and contested claims are written as contested. History is still revised: new evidence appears and interpretations change. The content is offered in good faith for general information, not as professional, legal or academic advice. If you find an error, say so and it will be corrected.
6. AI disclosure
The books are researched and written with the assistance of AI tools, and every fact, date and quotation is checked against the listed sources. The illustrations are AI-generated reconstructions, not photographs, except where credited to an archive. This is stated on the copyright page of every book and on every sales page.
7. Links to other sites
This site links to archives, institutions and booksellers it does not control and is not responsible for. Affiliate links are disclosed — see theaffiliate disclosure.
8. Limitation of liability
The site and its contents are provided "as is". To the fullest extent permitted by law, the operator is not liable for indirect or consequential loss arising from their use. Any direct liability is limited to the amount you paid, if anything. Nothing here limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be excluded — and nothing here affects your statutory consumer rights.
9. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of [JURISDICTION], and its courts have non-exclusive jurisdiction. If you are a consumer, you keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the country where you live.
